My Story
Early Life
I spent my early life dealing with the issues associated with untreated ADHD. I was smart, capable, and outgoing, but many normal school or work tasks — sitting still, paying attention when I wasn't interested, keeping my focus on a single task, reading environmental cues about the appropriate behavior — were very difficult. At some point I began self-medicating, and that spiraled out of control. I won't go into the details here — it got bad — but I got sober in 2006.
I got sober in Alcoholics Anonymous, a 12-step program whose language depends heavily on "God" or a "Higher Power." Friends and family who had known me as a lifetime atheist doubted I would be able to use a god-based 12-step program successfully. But I did!
I found that is was entirely possible to get sober, even in AA, without religious beliefs — but I know many people who walk out the door of their first meeting, turned off by the religious language. I got sober in a part of Brooklyn where being secular was the norm, but many people live in areas where a particular religious group dominates 12-step meetings. It can be very hard to be surrounded by people telling you that you need to believe in their deity to get sober.
So over the years, I have helped countless people find a sober path without religious beliefs. If you're not comfortable with 12-step language — or if you just prefer a one-on one approach, click here for a free consultation.
Teaching, Mentoring, and Listening
After getting sober I spent a decade as an art teacher and girls dorm parent at a boarding school in Arizona. Putting the principles of my sobriety into practice, I learned so much about teaching and mentoring people with compassion, and without judgment.
For a time I felt that being a dorm parent was my true calling. I loved hearing a knock on the door, and having no idea what they might need. A phone charger? Eyeglasses repair? Help with math homework? Permission to go to bed before check-in?
More often than not, even if they came for help with homework, what they needed was someone to listen to them. We would make some cookie dough (and occasionally even bake some cookies), and I would listen to their stories. Many students who end up at boarding schools have suffered painful losses, or have other trauma in their past. The skills I learned by listening to those young women inform my Active Listening practice to this day. I am still in touch with many of those students.
The Path to Broomfield Coaching
At the start of the pandemic, my wife and I left the school, and found ourselves searching for the next step on our path. On the advice of a dear friend, we each sought the help of a Life Coach. It was through that process that we discovered the power of coaching, and found our next step.
My wife Bridget is available as a coach, but her current coaching specialty is helping college applicants write exceptional College Application Essays. If you know a high schooler who is looking to compete in an applicant market flooded with AI-written drivel, send them to BroomfieldEditing.com today.
