The Problem with Conversation
I love conversations! They're a primary mode of human interaction. But in a conversation, we take turns waiting for our chance to speak. We listen to the other person, construct some kind of response — or just an intention to respond — and then we wait for a pause in which we can reply. In the early 2000s, I started seeing a psychiatrist. I expected him to ask a lot of questions, offer observations, and bring years of therapeutic expertise to bear on my problems.
He didn't do that. Instead, he just listened to me talk, for an hour at a time, without interrupting. He would only speak if I stalled out, or if some point required further explanation.
It was magical.
