The Problem with Conversation
I love conversations! They're a primary mode of human interaction. But in a conversation, we take turns waiting for our chance to speak. We listen to the other person, construct some kind of response — or just an intention to respond — and then we wait for a pause in which we can reply. In the early 2000s, I started seeing a psychiatrist. I expected him to ask a lot of questions, offer observations, and bring years of therapeutic expertise to bear on my problems. ​
He didn't do that. Instead, he just listened to me talk, for an hour at a time, without interrupting. He would only speak if I stalled out, or if some point required further explanation.
It was magical.
